Marquee is a free, open-source menu-bar app for Mac. It takes screenshots and screen recordings, and it remembers everything you copy.

Runs on macOS 13 or later, on Apple Silicon and Intel. MIT licensed.

Ten things it does, from one app

One shortcut opens All-in-One. Every other action has a button in the Marquee window, and a shortcut if you want one.

  • Choose

One shortcut, one toolbar. Drag an area, or pick Full Screen or a window from the menu, then screenshot it, record it, copy it with ⌘C, read its text, pin it or pick a color.

    ⌥⇧⌘A
  • Capture

Grab an area, a window or the whole screen. In All-in-One, press ↩ for the selection, F for the full screen or W for a window. Drag again any time to change the area.

    ↩ · F · W
  • Record

Record an area, the full screen or a single window to MP4 with your microphone, desktop audio, or both, chosen on a toolbar right under the area. Start instantly or after a 3-2-1 countdown, and watch the time tick in the menu bar. Save any recording as a looping GIF.

  • Mark up

Add arrows, boxes, text, highlights and numbered steps. Pixelate anything private before you send it.

  • Measure

Point at anything to see the distance to the nearest edges, or drag around a button to snap to its exact size. Copy the numbers or capture them. Needs macOS 14.

    your shortcut
  • Pick

Click any pixel on screen to copy its color as HEX, RGB, HSL or SwiftUI code. Every color you pick is kept in the Colors library.

    your shortcut
  • Read

Select part of the screen and copy the text in it. Recognition runs on your Mac, with no upload.

    ⌥⇧⌘A, then T
  • Pin

Float a screenshot above every window while you work. Scroll on it to fade it, double-click to close it.

    from the overlay
  • Keep

Text, links, images and files you copy are saved with the app they came from, and they stay searchable.

    ⇧⌘V
  • Paste

Pick an item from your history and it goes straight into the app you were typing in.

Clipboard history along the bottom of your screen

Press ⇧⌘V and type to search. Arrow keys move, Return pastes. The app you were in stays in front the whole time.

Screenshots land here too

Copy a capture from the overlay and it joins your history, so last week's screenshot is still a search away.

Passwords are skipped

Password managers tag what they copy with org.nspasteboard.ConcealedType. Marquee never records those items.

Stays on your Mac

No account and no sync. The only thing Marquee sends over the network is a daily check for new versions, which you can turn off. History lives in your Library folder.

Install

Takes about a minute, once. After that, Marquee updates itself: you get a prompt with the release notes, a restart installs the new version, and your permissions stay as they were.

  1. Download the DMG

Get the latest release from GitHub, open it, and drag Marquee into Applications.

  2. Open it once with right-click

Releases aren't notarized by Apple yet, so macOS asks you to confirm the first launch: right-click the app and choose Open.

  3. Allow Screen Recording

macOS asks the first time you capture. Accessibility is optional; it lets Marquee paste into other apps for you.

Free, open source, and yours to change.
